If you were to carbon date a piece of bog oak, bog yew, or even bog pine, you might be surprised at the age of the wood. It could be up to 5000 years old.

Due to the acidic properties of the bog environment, the wood is merely darkened as it lays waiting for a second life as a carving.

A piece of carved bog oak is a direct and tactile link with our past. A bog oak carving you hold in your hand may be from a tree that once offered shelter to a bronze age warrior, the tree may have been the crowning canopy for the ritual inauguration of a celtic king or queen.

A sure way of linking the wood to the past, and specifically the druids, is with an ogham inscription. Ogham is the earliest form of Irish writing, is named after the god Oghma and was used by the learned people.

Personalised ogham inscriptions such as failte (welcome), beannacht (blessings) and siochain (peace) can offer harmony and add a little of old celtic Ireland to a home, but if you prefer pog mo thon inscribed on a piece, then that’s not a problem!

Two conjoining pieces with the bride and grooms names, and a double spiral carved on them, makes for an original and stunning wedding gift.

The cost of a carved piece of bog oak, bog yew or bog pine starts at €50 + postage.

Typically that would get you a piece approximately 20cm tall and roughly 6cm square, however many pieces have their own unique contours and so define the shape of the finished bog oak carving.
